Mrs. Gwendelrae Hicks

Founder, Owner, President, CFOP

Gwendelrae Hicks is the Founder and President of Northern Star Mortuary. Born and raised in Manhattan, Kansas, she graduated from Manhattan High School in 1993 and attended Kansas State University before earning her Associate degree in Mortuary Science from Kansas City, Kansas Community College in 1998.

Answering her calling at 16, Gwendelrae became Kansas’ first Black female licensed mortician at age 31. She and her husband, Scottie Hicks, opened Northern Star Mortuary on June 21, 2007, later expanding to Wichita in 2019.

Guided by the pillars of Knowledge, Passion, Compassion, and Faith, Gwendelrae and her team are dedicated to supporting families with professionalism and care during their time of need.

Our Inspiration

The name Northern Star reflects our mission to be a guiding light for those facing loss. Inspired by the story of Harriet Tubman and her courageous efforts along the Underground Railroad, we are inspired by her determination, faith, and vision to lead others toward hope and freedom.
